History of Sharon

The Town of Sharon was established when John L. Rainey conveyed land in 1889. The town took its name from the Sharon Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, which was established in 1796.

Rainey also gave land for a train station when the Charleston, Cincinnati, and Chicago Railroad (known as the Three C's) came through in the 1880's.

History is evident throughout town, as many of the town's former cotton-based economy still stand. Sharon's downtown is lined with buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Sharon is proud to have been featured on a PBS Program Trail of History - Small Towns, where some great footage old and new of our town are highlighted as well as some of our residents!
